What’s the Point of Purpose – March 2006
By Sean Wolfington
March 2006
Clarity of vision and definiteness of purpose develop self-reliance, personal initiative, imagination, enthusiasm, self-discipline and concentrated effort. A person’s success in the car business and success in life will be limited without all of these. Definiteness of purpose also brings a host of other advantages.
Decision-making capability
Successful people gather all the facts as quickly as possible to make decisions quickly and firmly. Unsuccessful people make decisions slowly and change them often. The vast majority of people never make up their mind about their major purpose in life; they simply can’t make a decision and stick to it so they drift. If you clarify your vision and sense of purpose, you can approach the very next problem you face with the resolve to make a decision. You will make some mistakes, but have courage and remember that any decision is better than none. Clarity of purpose will help in decision making, because you can judge any decision by whether or not it will help you contribute to your goals.
Cooperation
Clarity of vision and definiteness of purpose develop confidence in your own integrity and character, which attracts favorable attention from others and inspires their cooperation. Those folks who can’t determine their own goals will be inspired by one who can and feel drawn to cooperate.
Focus
Definiteness of purpose encourages you to focus, and focus leads to the continuous pursuit of improvement. Success in the car business will depend a great deal on your ability to focus on a specific area of the business and perform exceptionally well there. Clarity of vision will act as a compass to direct you toward the areas you need to focus on and the specialized knowledge you need, or the specialist you need to partner with, to succeed.
Budgeting capability
Once you have determined your major purpose, you will and it easier to budget resources like time and money and to prioritize your day-to-day endeavors so that they will lead to the attainment of your purpose. Increasing your ability to prioritize and budget effectively always pays dividends because each dollar and each moment can be used to make progress toward your goal.
Opportunity alertness
Clarity of vision and definiteness of purpose increase your awareness about opportunities that may arise that relate to your major purpose and will inspire you with the courage you need to act on them. If you can see an opportunity as quickly as you can see the faults of others or the potential barriers to your own success, you will soon succeed.
Faith
The greatest benefit of cultivating a clear vision and sense of purpose is that your mind will open to faith. Your mindset becomes positive and free from the limitations of doubt, discouragement, indecision, procrastination and fear. These limitations are some of the greatest we will face in the car business and in life, but possess faith in yourself and in the knowledge that your purpose is to achieve your greatest potential and you can succeed – starting now. Knowing that you stand to gain a whole host of competitive advantages should be motivation enough to clarify your vision and develop definiteness of purpose. You will not succeed in today’s market if you cannot convince other people to cooperate with you, or if you struggle in any of these areas: decision making, focus, budgeting and prioritizing, acting on opportunity and having faith in yourself and your products and services.
